Zell am See

The town of Zell am See is located in the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park in the Pinzgau region of Salzburgerland. 'Zell' is one of the most popular holiday destinations see many tourists visiting each year, with many often returning. The area is particularly popular during the winter months due to it's modern ski facilities and apres ski party atmosphere, yet it is often overlooked during the Summer months. This therefore means the town and life in general is much quieter and holds a calm and peaceful atmosphere.

Zell am See's lake is beautifully clean and is open to a huge variety of activities in the Summer. Swimming, water skiing, wakeboarding, scuba diving, windsurfing, pedalows, rowing & sailing are all easily available! There are various locations dotted around the lake where you can relax, sunbath, swim and watch the world pass by. There are numerous villages nearby and Kaprun is roughly ten minutes away by bus. 

 

Zell am See is a wonderfully beautiful place to visit with its pedestrianized centre and plesant shopping area. There are plenty of shops, bars and traditional restaurants to visit, plus a train station, which provides convenient transport to Salzburg. Should you wish to visit the historic city. The centre of Zell am See is primarily a traffic-free zone, where you can wonder around at your own leisure.

 

Zell am See often hosts market days and festivals, with many people selling 'home made' items in the town square. The town regularly hosts events such as the 'Stadtfest', every Wednesday evening, and the 'Seefest' which usually runs twice in the Summer. The centre is taken over by musicians, entertainers, stages and of course - beer tents and the town comes alive - These festivals are not be missed!!!

Zell am See is easily accesable due to the Train station towards the bottom end of town. The station provides convenient access to Salzburg, Kitzbuhel, Krimml Waterfalls and many other places of interest. Train prices are reasonable, i.e €15 to Salzburg and trains are extremely punctual!

The Schmittenhohe & Sonnenalm mountains are easily accessable. From within  just five minutes of the centre of the town and you will be heading up out into the wilderness.

Just 1 minute away from the centre lies the City Xpress Gondola. This gondola can take you roughly half way up the Schmittenhohe mountain. From this point there are various hiking routes or you can take the lift back down aswell!

If you'd prefer to be taken directly to the peak of the mountain the Schmittenhohe Gondola is also available. To get to the Gondola, a short bus trip up the Schmitten strasse gets you there in minutes. There are plenty of hiking trails up The Schmittenhohe, Sonnenalm, Thumerbach and Schutdorf mountains. Sadly, there are no offical mountain biking trails in this range mentioned above - Mountain biking takes place in Kaprun or Thummersbach, Saalbach/Hintergelmm, Leogang and other locations further afield.
